If you want some clarity on the real risks in forest management consult those on the ground . " Facebook : : Fire and the Australian Environment "
Things have got so catastrophic with incompetent political management that when there iss REAL risk - many of us who used to try to save lives are no longer willing to go into the bush. While the current management paradigms operate its pathetically PC ( don't cut anything or touch anything ) reactive , hypocritical( few insist on proper protective buffers for houses and roadsetc
There aren't a lot of experienced and capable people talking on that site because the noise from the speculators and cynics is deafening and persistent .
Not being really listened to " Notalk" is a precursor to suicide. One 2 one please

I wrote this well before the panic driven weeks of December 2019 when the media (esp ABC and SBS) went into a constant mad frenzy over how catastrophic the fires were in New south wales in particular .Listening to these blowhards and their insane preoccupation with high temperatures you would think it was blowing hard all through those weeks ,- it wasn't and even if they knew it ,you can't spoil a good story with facts.
We expect sensationalism from the commercial channels mbut not from our ABC.
As a long time observer of cry wolf, risk managemnet and true resilience development, it should be noted that the panic was driven and hidden by a lot of smoke in Sydney and low winds .
in a typical ABC remote solutions from on high , ABC Qand A's were calling for more helicopters and volunteers.
I have nearly been killed by being singed off a CFA truck because the volunteer driver clearly didn't know how to look after his passengers , drove to fast too close and could have killed us all .
God help us in we have a real windy real bad fireday this summer - es in the Otways.
The people charged with the job aren't allowed to round up fires in a way that meant much higher chance of working to contain the outbreaks early . with bulldozers and new tracks through the bush for eg.
